From United We Dream, info@unitedwedream.org:
The Dream Act of 2017 has been introduced in the Senate to protect DACA recipients. It has four sponsors: Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY). United We Dream asks for peole to telephone their Attorney General. The number they give is (832) 610-3896.

Their suggested message is "I am calling to ask the Attorney General to come out publicly to defend the DACA program. This program has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth across the country and it must be protected. I expect my attorney general to support the immigrant community and protect DACA."

Welcome to Wednesday and time to tackle the thing that has been lurking and needs to be done. What will it be? What is that PITA of a thing? Care to share, we're here for you and will be virtually behind you with all the encouragement you need.

In need of a little challenge to get you to start something? My challenge to you today is to check on the fridge. Depending on your energy levels and time allowance, select what's most appropriate for you. Remember if you do want to break it up or end up having more energy/time that you initially expected, you can always come back and do another step later today (or tomorrow).

Step 1 - Open the fridge and do a quick check for anything out of date and needing to go.
Step 2 - Spend a bit more time and do a thorough check to the back of shelves/bottom of drawers etc and make sure that you've checked everything in there - take mental note of anything that needs using quickly.
Step 3 - Starting with the top shelf, take everything out, lift out the shelf and clean it, dry it, replace it and put back in a more organised fashion - you may at this point realise that some things would ideally be in a different fridge location, whether it can be moved may depend upon there being space in its ideal location.
Step 4 - If you've still got energy/time, repeat with next shelf
Repeat Step 3 if you wish, until all shelves/drawers and the little door shelves have been checked and cleaned. If you can, as you go, wipe down the inside top and walls of the fridge as well with a cloth and some sort of light cleaner to get rid of any lurking invisible unwanted life forms. If you are tackling just a shelf at a time, don't get the top/walls too wet so that no cleaner runs down onto food stored lower in the fridge.

Remember that there is no obligation to do this challenge and also even if you do start it, it doesn't have to be done all in one go - a shelf a day for the week would be just as wonderful if you wanted to tackle it that way.

So with that I shall say goodbye (I'm not back until fairly late tonight, so please do cheer each other along), good luck with whatever you decide to tackle and a reminder that the optional challenge is OPTIONAL and also does not have to be completed as the WHOLE task - step 1 is a success, as is any other step. Look after yourselves, remember to think of your rewards for completing any personal pain in the tuckus tasks and let us know how you get along.

The Senate Trumpcare bill is dead!

Four Republican senators have come out against the Senate's ACA replacement bill.

(Of course, McConnell is now moving to repeal with no replacement, so the fight's not over yet. Keep calling!)

But I have to celebrate this moment. If someone had told me in January that we'd get this far, I wouldn't have believed it! With luck, they'll find out that the straight repeal is just as unworkable as they thought it would be in February when they decided against it. And either way, we've made them spend six months on internal backstabbing, badmouthing, and time wasting that they can't get back, and a lot of ill will generated within the Republican caucus that won't be forgiven without a lot of effort.

This is inspired by a place by my work that does something similar, but with pear compote.

Ingredients:

* Sharp white cheddar (mine came from CostCo, the Coastal stuff)
* Rosemary bread (mine came from Trader Joe's)
* Lemon curd (another thing from Trader Joe's)
* Butter (I did unsalted, the cheddar is plenty salty enough)

Tools:

* Toaster Oven
* Frying pan and oven

Steps:

* Lightly toast one side of the rosemary bread in the oven
* One one slice of rosemary bread, put a pile of chopped up white cheddar chunks on the toasted side. Put it back into the toaster oven until the cheese gets pretty melty.
* While that's going on, spread lemon curd on the other piece of bread, on the toasted side.
* Put a pat of butter in your frying pan and melt it
* Take your melted cheesy bread out of the toaster oven, put both pieces together so the cheese of one side is against the lemon curd of the other
* Put your sandwich into the pan, swish it around, flip it to the other side--this will make sure that both sides have butter as you pan toast.
* Toast both sides of your sandwich in the pan with the butter, flipping as necessary. When it's toasted to your liking, put it on a plate.
* Tada! Fancy grilled cheese.

ACTION: Battle for Net Neutrality

Haven't seen anyone posting about this, so here we are (copied from the Net Neutrality Day of Action materials from Battle for the Net):

On July 12, 2017, websites, Internet users, and online communities will come together to sound the alarm about the FCC’s attack on net neutrality. Learn how you can join the protest and spread the word at https://www.battleforthenet.com/july12/.

Right now, new FCC Chairman and former Verizon lawyer Ajit Pai has a plan to destroy net neutrality and give big cable companies immense control over what we see and do online. If they get their way, the FCC will give companies like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T control over what we can see and do on the Internet, with the power to slow down or block websites and charge apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience.

If we lose net neutrality, we could soon face an Internet where some of your favorite websites are forced into a slow lane online, while deep-pocketed companies who can afford expensive new “prioritization” fees have special fast lane access to Internet users – tilting the playing field in their favor.

I have only to add that I want my internet full of dynamic, accessible, user-created content and free exchange of information and the opportunity to get to know people, rather than passively consuming corporate-sponsored media. I want all of you guys in my life, not whatever big cable wants me to read and watch.

Here we are approaching the middle of the week and it's time to think of something to tackle that's been a pain lurking around and waiting to be done. Something that's maybe been getting lost in the welter of important 'do me now' things. Or maybe it's something that's been niggling at your conscience and making you feel bad because it hasn't been done and has just been sitting there making you feel worse about it.

Can you bite-size it? Make it smaller and easier to achieve? If it really is just too big, can you split it into chunks and tackle at least part of it?

For those in need of a mid week challenge.... Can you find five things that are in the wrong place and move them either to where they need to go or to interim storage if their ultimate destination is currently unavailable or unsuitable? Five things too easy for you - make it ten or fifteen. Or repeat it at a second point through the day to get more done.

On another note, I was reading a blog post this morning about kitchens and kitchen organisation, that I thought might be interesting to others here (with the added benefit of a stonesoup recipe at the bottom of the post). The blog is Stonesoup by Jules - the principle being to create recipes that use fewer ingredients but still taste good - today's recipe if for an avocado and bacon salad. Anywhere the link is here and it's to a feed on Dreamwidth rather than elsewhere.

Good luck team, share with us how you're getting along. I'm off to work now so won't be able to respond until I get back this evening, but now that my good thoughts are with you all.

New Founders Every Election App

I hope I got the goddamn link right THIS TIME...(if not, try wallofus.org, it's in the current post

New Founders, which seems to be a coalition that includes Wall of Us, has an "Every Election" app--when you sign up, you indicate your address, and they give you a list or Google map of all the elections you're eligible to vote in, and you can ping your friends and family to tell them to vote too. For elections that are way-down-ticket, literally a handful of votes can swing the election.

Throw-together meals.

Took a bunch of vegetables, steam-cooked them, scooped some onto rice, scooped some chicken onto the vegetables, added Triple Ginger Teriyaki sauce, and boom! Simple, delicious meal! Granted, the cooking and cutting of the chicken and the veggies was long and difficult work, but now I'll have a simple throw-together meal for when I have less energy and/or time! (The rice takes only 8 minutes in my microwave-usable rice cooker. And no, it's not instant rice, it's regular rice.)

Veggies I have in this batch:
Broccoli, green beans, sugar snap peas in their pods, three different colors of bell pepper (red, yellow, and orange), carrots, celery, mushrooms, and yellow squash (basically a yellow zucchini).

Later I might add a can of baby corn and a can of water chestnuts. And I have a bottle of orange sauce for when the triple ginger runs out.

So yeah there's another thing: you could buy canned veggies and pre-cut chicken and save time and effort.

bath/shower cleaning help?

The bathtub and shower is one of those areas that I Don't Want To Deal With. Ever.

Right now, I have just spent 10min scrubbing at said area with Lysol all-purpose cleaner and a sponge. This removed a lot of the brown grime from the tiles and the sides of the tub, but there's still some grime visibly there, even if we don't count the grout that's approximately mahogany and should be approximately snow. And I have positively murdered my right hand in the process. (I need that hand to type with! I need the tendonitis / carpal tunnel / wtfever hand pain shit not to be flaring!)

Can people recommend good—ideally low-dollars, low-spoons, low-time, and especially easy-on-the-hands—ways to (1) deep-clean (2) keep clean the bath/shower area?

Thanks.
