Hello all!

Once upon a time, I was active in this community, and much more so on Dreamwidth. Then I took what ultimately became a years-long sabbatical, and these days, flitting on the edges.

One of my goals for 2017, is to write more, both professionally and personally. Long story short, back in November, the husband and I moved to Pittsburgh, and had to dip into our savings to pay for moving expenses. Money has since been weird.

To that end, I have started a Patreon as a way to supplement our income with my writing. Primarily, I am posting on my Urban Fantasy novel, and occasionally, poetry.

Pledges start at as little as $1/month. There's some nifty perks and stretch goals in place.

Plus! Let me know you linked from Dreamwidth, and there will be a welcome perk thrown in!

Then maybe you will like [community profile] weekly_food_challenge! It went away for a while but now it's back!

Every Wednesday a new theme is posted. It might be an ingredient or a cuisine or something else. You then post your recipes inspired by the theme. We welcome vegetarians and other people with restricted diets. Come and join us!

ETA: I should not have constructed the title like that. Now my brain won't stop replaying the Cheezy Peaz sketch from the Fast Show... -_-"

marinade to make meat easier

a lot of marinade recipes will warn you not to marinate meat more than hour or so, and definitely not overnight, if the marinade has ginger in it, or acidic ingredients. the reason is that the meat will get broken down and become mushy.

if you want/need to eat meat and have jaw pain, trouble swallowing, or whatever other mouth/throat/tooth stuff, i recommend going against their advice! i marinated stir-fry beef overnight in a marinade of tamari, honey, and grated* ginger and indeed it broke the meat down to an "improper" mushy texture. it was very easy to chew and swallow.

*i tried this same marinade with the ginger in large chunks and it didn't work. it only worked when i grated the ginger.

(i did the ratio of my three marinade ingredients by taste, so i can't report, but remember, you can improvise a marinade and keep tasting and adjusting it as long as you don't add the meat till it's finished.)

Weekly Check In April 23

Yesterday -- Earth Day -- saw tens of thousands of people March for Science in hundreds of places around the world, celebrating science and protesting the Minority President's proposed cuts to federal science and research budgets. Those cuts will form part of the new budget which Congress needs to pass when it returns this coming week. The likely sticking points are the Mexican Wall and funding for the ACA, while there are plans to revive the repeal of the ACA before the administration's 100th day on April 29.

TODAY, SUNDAY APRIL 23: ACLU People Power is holding deportation solidarity events outside regional ICE offices at 3 p.m.

Housekeeping
Reminder that we have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

It's been quite quiet in the comm this week, but here are some reminders of ongoing or future actions

Action
Public Participation in EPA's Regulatory Reform - Deadline: 15 May 2017

Upcoming Protests

April 29: Peoples Climate March - see these posters for National Parks in 2050 if climate change continues for inspiration and slogans.
June 11: LGBT+ March

Other news to know
There's been a steady drip feed of minor new revelations about the Trump Campaign's Russian links, the situation with North Korea rumbles on, and Syria is still a mess. For a catch up to the major developments each day, What the Fuck Just Happened Today usually provides good links to the key stories.

French voters go to the polls today to pick the two candidates for the run-off on May 7, and the UK government has called a snap general election on June 8. (I'm in the UK and this just makes me want to cry, because our opposition parties are so dysfunctional at the moment. I think my main hope is that the early signs the centre/left are figuring out how to build the kind of resistance movements, like Indivisible, that you've seen in the US will bear fruit -- if not for this election, for the long term.)

So, what have you all been up to in the last week or planning to get involved in next week?

ACLU People Power has organized deportation solidarity event outside regional ICE offices tomorrow, Sunday, April 23rd at 3 p.m.

I know there's one in Boston, and a quick check found others in New York and Seattle. (The website isn't set up to search for events by date or time; I found those two by searching based on my old NYC and Bellevue, WA, zip codes.)

The Boston event looks small so far: 121 of us have signed up to attend, so I figure I'll be more noticeable there than I would be if I'd made it to the March for Science today.

Note: this was originally announced for April 22nd, and then rescheduled a couple of days ago.

 I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass,
Each honey tree,
Each bit of mud,
And stick and stone
Is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.

And just as I
Need every bit
Of me to make
My body fit,
So Earth needs
Grass and stone and tree
And things that grow here
Naturally.

That’s why we
Celebrate this day.
That’s why across
The world we say:
As long as life,
As dear, as free,
I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
