Here's the plan: every Friday, let's recommend some people and/or communities to follow on Dreamwidth. That's it. No complicated rules, no "pass this on to 7.328 friends or your cat will die". Just introduce us to some new things to read.

"You with the Guardian?"

Here's a thought:

If you disapprove of politicians beating up journalists (or winking at other politicians' beating up journalists) and have some spare cash, one possible action would be to contribute to the Guardian -- whose journalist, Ben Jacobs, got beaten up.

There are various options for becoming a member and paying a regular subscription, but you can also make a one-off contribution.

Although they're a British newspaper, their coverage of US issues is very very strong.

They would like to note (in an e-mail sent out to members) that they recently ran pieces including GOP candidate Greg Gianforte has financial ties to US-sanctioned Russian companies and Trump diehards stay loyal in Montana's 'white man's country' – video:

In that interview, the Guardian's west coast bureau chief, Paul Lewis, challenged Gianforte over his support of Trump's executive order that threatens more than two dozen national monuments in America, including the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in Montana.

The moving cubes arrive tomorrow. I have them for three business days (one day for arrival, one full day, one day for pickup) plus the intervening weekend.

I intellectually know that I have a whole lot of things sorted and packed, but the fact that I haven't got much in the way of a sensible staging area makes everything very hard to see the progress, and many of my daily-use things are still front and center, even though the closets and cubbies are getting packed and stacked.

Aaaaaa.

We'll be loading the moving cubes, and then I take some important things in my car and drive from the SF Bay Area to the Seattle-Tacoma area. I'll be crashing with my sister for a while; there will be some overlap between me and her boyfriend who is currently staying with her. I'm bringing an air mattress.

Motivation.
Sanity.
Encouragement.

All of these things are hard. Occasionally my partner has to remind me that hyperventilating is bad, and maybe that anti-anxiety medication is there for a reason.

Indivisible Guide is holding a Facebook Live event tonight at 8:30 pm (eastern), covering the CBO score and other TrumpCare issues, Russia, and "how you can hold your members of Congress accountable this recess." The message also has info. about the June 3 March for Truth in over 100 cities--the cutline is "for transparency, for democracy, for truth."

ETA: This just in--en banc 4th Circuit voted 10-3 to affirm the nationwide preliminary injunction against the Muslim ban. The decision describes the ban as using "vague words of national security, but in context drips with religious intolerance, animus, and discrimination."

From [community profile] punning's profile:

Puns and wordplay welcome, the worse the better. Long, short, contorted, obscure, whatever. Filthy OK, but must use cuts and some kind of content warning. Likewise triggery. Visual puns OK, but must have description in an alt= tag. Likewise, recorded audio or video puns need a transcript of some kind. (I'm not deaf or blind, so leaving the specifics open, but if you don't know what's needed, be prepared to take those who do at their word, and accept contributions if offered.)

Clean or filthy, puns will likely break your brain over time and cause copious amounts of pain. If you can't live with that, you probably shouldn't be reading this comm.

From [personal profile] watersword in a comment in our suggestions post:
Rep. Ted Lieu (D - CA) has introduced a bill to ban conversion therapy (aka abusing queer people to make them not-queer) nationwide: HR.2119 - Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act of 2017. There's a companion bill in the Senate, S.928 - Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act of 2017. People can contact their reps or senators to thank them for co-sponsoring (the list of cosponsors is available at those links), or urge them to vote for the bills if and when they get out of committee.

Holy shit:

The Guardian: Republican candidate charged with assault after 'body-slamming' Guardian reporter

"Allegedly", while a legal requirement at this point, means that, among other things, the Fox News team also present wrote this about Gianforte's alleged attack on Ben Jacobs:

Jacobs persisted with his question. Gianforte told him to talk to his press guy, Shane Scanlon.

At that point, Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him. Faith, Keith and I watched in disbelief as Gianforte then began punching the reporter. As Gianforte moved on top of Jacobs, he began yelling something to the effect of, "I'm sick and tired of this!"

Jacobs scrambled to his knees and said something about his glasses being broken. He asked Faith, Keith and myself for our names. In shock, we did not answer. Jacobs then said he wanted the police called and went to leave. Gianforte looked at the three of us and repeatedly apologized. At that point, I told him and Scanlon, who was now present, that we needed a moment. The men then left.

To be clear, at no point did any of us who witnessed this assault see Jacobs show any form of physical aggression toward Gianforte, who left the area after giving statements to local sheriff's deputies.

Oh, and it was all caught on audio tape.

Fox News: Key Montana newspapers pull Gianforte endorsement after incident

Here's [personal profile] colorblue's post on the Montana election -- the polls close today so I'm guessing it's too late to donate to Gianforte's opponent (ETA: see comment, no it's not too late, you can donate now and apparently he currently has 5X matching), but you never know:

Action: Montana Special Election

Note: Given the extreme bizarreness and how incredibly close to the special election it was, I'm sure there will be alt-right conspiracy theories about how Gianforte was deliberately provoked by a sinister foreign journalist from some sort of commie foreign paper.

For context: the Guardian is an extremely reputable, deeply earnest, moderately left-of-centre (by UK standards) newspaper. Think New York Times crossed with Slate and far, far less money, perhaps? Its capacity for sinister scheming is minimal.
