I haven't played in ages because back pain but...[on one of my six farms] my farmer married Abigail and I decided the nerdy couple would be semi-terrible to their child and so the kid is named Remus. (a compromise between "Latin mythology nerds" and "HP fandom"). I gigglesnort to myself every time I see that kid let me tell you.

Also there is a gender neutral toddler mod for the game if anyone else is interested.

So now Stardew Valley has been Officially Released for Mac and Linux I thought I would post about mods I am using. I don't know how well the mods work on Mac and Linux -- though I plan to test the Linux ones, natch -- but this is just here for general reference. Also, for an overview of mods on an Official Review Site, here's one on PC Gamer.

I basically categorize the types of mods I use into two: gameplay mods and cosmetic mods. There are also two install methods. In one, you backup your Stardew Valley folder (backup: important), and then replace a particular file with a mod file. So you can replace the file for cows with a new file and viola, different cows! In another, you use a mod manager called SMAPI. You place the mods inside the SMAPI folder, then launch the game from SMAPI. (This is used for more complex mods, like "make fishing easier" and "let me summon my goddamn horse").

Note: it's good to install mods from a reputable source, and I use either nexusmods or stardewmods.

So, ONWARD.

Gameplay Mods to save time, mental energy, and head desking

Time Speed Adjust the day length so if you don't want to feel rushed, you don't have to ([personal profile] tyger this mod is for you!)
  • NPC Map Locations For when you have to give an NPC a quest item/present and don't feel like finding out where they are/might be on the wiki every 5 minutes.

  • Chest Labels because my memory is not that great and this way I can actually sort things and not go "where the fuck is that thing I need" all the time

  • Signs for your fruit trees so you can remember what you planted, where

  • Tapper's dream mod (technically a cheat) makes the non-fruit trees grow in winter and other things that just make them easier to grow. Note: because it makes it easier to harvest the seeds so they grow on purpose rather than everywheres, can affect lumber production if you don't stay on top of purposeful planting

  • Horse Whistle which teleports your horse to your location. Which just...trust me, if you don't have a horse yet. IT'S BETTER.

  • Slower fence decay because I have better things to do than repair fences all the goddamn time

  • Show sell price so you can scroll over your inventory and see item sell price

    • There's also an easier fishing mod that might be useful (linked from PC Gamer article) but it's not from one of the modding sites I usually use.

Cosmetic mod post coming later when I'm not trying to adulting.

The Stardew Valley Mac/Linux Beta is now available! I don't know if everyone is in Pokemon-land but if you haven't been able to play LET ME REC IT for you.

Steam beta pwd is MonoGame2016

Beta bug report page

dev tweet with instructions & responses. @concernedape is really good about responding to help requests in a timely manner, too

Planning on downloading the Linux beta myself later because then I don't have to keep booting onto my Windows partition.

I still need to make a Mods post but I expect those will also work slightly differently on Mac/Linux.

in case you are interested, games I am currently playing:

  • Stardew Valley

  • Ingress

  • Pokemon Go

  • Star Trek Timelines (on a trial download, still deciding what I think)

  • Animal Crossing New Leaf (though I am way behind but I time travel shamelessly so nbd)

  • Dragon Age: Inquisition (but I'm stalled because my hands do not always like PS4 controller)
lizcommotion: word "Hi!" surrounded by all the hi signs from the game Glitch (glitch hi)
so if I have been posting sporadically of late, that is because Stardew Valley has eaten my soul free time.

It is a farming sim game a la Harvest Moon/Animal Crossing, but combines the best of a lot of games! general game thoughts )

I will give this warning: if you get visual seizures, this may not be the game for you? at least not on days when it snows/rains. the graphics there are very...well, they are close to being too much if I were to have a migraine day, so I would advise against the game if seizures are an issue, because there is a lot of blinky black/white contrast. :/

personal feelz about playing this game as a queer person )

So, uh. Yeah, I'm having feels with this game. Actually the feelz started with the intro, which was more related to feelings about capitalism and labor. You may want to play the game yourself to see it, but here is a screenshot from the intro to give you an idea:

Oh, did I mention also that female characters can have beards? Yes. Yes they can. (I imagine there are not restrictions on male characters accessories, either. But.

Also you can have dinosaurs in your Big Coop once you upgrade. Yes. You can have dinosaurs on your farm.

I'm not sorry if this eats your life also. I have not loved a game this much since Glitch.

ETA: I am totally cool with you sharing this entry! Though prefer not too much bookface sharing, etc.

so during my plague of doom I have had so little energy that making tea is tiring. knitting has been out as an activity for the most part.

i wiped my town in animal crossing new leaf (ACNL) and started over.

when I write the inevitable letters to my town's animals, I have been occasionally RPing as a Dark Mayor Overlord who is slightly lacking in social niceties. I  mean, there are not many options for when you get to enter your own text. Mostly it has been through the postal system and also farming rare beetles on the island. Mostly I am a nice overlord!

my inner dark humor comes out )

I am building an awesome town, though. with good planning and I designed my own tiles and stuff! I just want them to suggest actually good public works projects, not like "ooo a yield sign!" because wtf. (I mean, I should be patient, I *just* got the cafe.)

also in case you haven't seen it, this is the best thing on the internet in a bit: the setup wizard (or, hogwarts got an IT department and this is their tumblr)

lizcommotion: Fandom is the universe's way of making up for family (fandom family)
I do not even know where most of this is from anymore, but I share with you becauase I found them interesting and I do so enjoy [personal profile] umadoshi's linkspam. I hope you find something of interest.

@hourlykitten If you use twitter, I've been following @hourlykitten rather than Emergency Kitten because @hourlykitten cites sources of photos and I find that admirable. (also, it's nice to be able to track back to the original photographer, etc.) I have no affiliation, but I recommend them.

There is an adorable rat on this chilled out cat's head. Not recommended at home.

(sorry for the posting spam today)

In regards to my earlier post about difficulty with competition and competitive games (tw: evil bees/dysfunctional families), just wanted to say that I do really enjoy collaborative games.

Herein be an open list of collaborative games. Feel free to add more in the comments!

Polaris (a GM-less RPG about being a doomed knight in the Northlands; my first session lasted 9 hours; I don't do tabletop much). Tao games also has a lot of other promising-looking RPGs, including Hot Guys Making Out.

Crap Scrabble looks amazing but I have not had a chance to play it yet (example from the rules: "If the cat lays down on your tiles they are no longer yours and you must play around the cat until she leaves.")

Improv games (honestly probably where I first learned cooperative gameplay). Simple ones include the kind where someone starts a story and then passes it on to another person, etc. Can also be facilitated by Story Cubes.

Obviously harder to plan, but those things where you have a murder mystery party at your house or wherever. I assume a lot of LARPing also falls somewhere in this category, but some does not.

(For definition's sake, I am non-scientifically definining a collaborative game as one in which no one person "wins", and/or the point is just to have fun or create something together and points are not emphasized.)

I am slowly developing a room in my Animal Crossing: New Leaf house that is a Sherlock Holmes study. No particular reason. Just because I can.

I've been meaning to write a more thorough post about ALL THE FEELS AND THOUGHTS I've been having about ACNL, but there are too many.

So here's a snippet:

screencap of an Animal Crossing video game room with wallpaper, a fossil, a fireplace, antique furniture, an old school telephone, science equipment, and of course, a violin. My character is dressed in a blue-gray cap and gray tartan, and she has an orange ponytail.

There is more to come, but I couldn't fit any more furniture into this space. So I need to save up more bells to expand it. Mwahahahahaha. Ahem.
